Abstract:This research studies the relationship between land uses and infrastructure on residential burglary. The objective was to assess which theory is better at explaining residential burglary: -the “awareness space,” which states that crime takes place at edges or along paths on the way to work, school, or recreation, or -the “activity support” concept of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), which states that mixed uses and increased traffic in neighborhoods is positive because it decreases the risk of burglary. Design recommendations based on the findings of this research are discussed.
