Abstract:Nonverbal behaviors play an important role in communicating with others. One particular kind of nonverbal interaction behavior is mimicry. It has been argued that behavioral mimicry supports harmonious relationships in social interaction through creating affiliation, rapport, and liking between interaction partners. Affective computing that also employs knowledge about mimicry behavior and is able to predict how mimicry affects social situations and relations can find immediate applications in human-human and in human-computer interaction to improve interaction. In this short survey we look at various aspects of mimicry from the point of view of automatic analysis and automatic generation. This latter issue needs to be considered when we add mimicry behavior to embodied conversational agents. Experiments in which we record face-to-face interactions in order to obtain a corpus of mimicry behavior are in progress.
