Abstract:The rapid proliferation of computer networks offers unique possibilities for researchers to exchange information, and equally unique challenges for the people who have to realise these possibilities. A new generation of computer tools is needed to gain full advantage of this development. A key feature of these tools is that they possess built-in awareness of scientific content. This takes ontologies, domain-informed natural-language processing, virtual reality, and integration techniques.
