| Abstract: | Magnetic tape storage is shown to be a relatively inexpensive technology for backup, archival and distribution of digital data. Metal evaporated (ME) tape provides a remarkable good recording performance being expressed in its favorable frequency spectrum and overwrite behaviour. However, recording measurements and simulations indicate the favorable perspectives of newly developed very thin single or double layer metal particle (MP) tape. It is argued that designing optimal tape-recording equipment involves considering a variety of system aspects like magnetic and mechanical tape properties, recording-head design, position servo and signal processing. |
