| Abstract: | A novel noise reduction scheme called Balanced Modulation and Detection (BMD) is proposed. In this scheme, the modulating RF signal is half-wave rectified in the optical domain, eliminating the DC optical power resulting from pre-biasing of the optical source. A link model employing this scheme has been developed and key parameters describing link performance have been calculated. A comparison with an externally-modulated link called the class-AB (CAB) photonic link is carried out. Improvement in link SNR and dynamic range up to 8.7 dB and 18 dB, respectively, are obtained. |
