Abstract:This thesis contributes to the development of the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) technique on non-uniform and adaptive grids. This extension allows to effciently simulate complex, turbulent flow problems as typically encountered in industry, weather prediction and aerodynamics. In an LES only ow features with a typical length-scale larger than the filter-width are computed. The effect of the small or unresolved ow features is incorporated through Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS)-models. By only computing the larger ow features the computing requirements for a LES are considerably reduced compared to those of a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) in which all ow features are computed. For the actual simulations presented in this thesis use is made of the Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method (DG-FEM). This type of discretization can efficiently deal with non-uniform and adaptive grids.
