Abstract:	The ability to control the Quality of Service (QoS) characteristics of distributed systems is essential for their success. The QoS characteristics that we consider in this thesis are performance characteristics (response time and throughput) and availability characteristics (uptime, mean-timebetween-disruptions and mean-time-to-repair). The research presented in this thesis can be used to develop commercial QoS mechanisms that improve the QoS of component-middleware-based applications.
