Abstract:	Sensors based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are the topic of this article. First an overview of the analytical techniques used for the characterization of monolayers is given. This is followed by details of the use of functional SAMs to study interactions with analytes, for example, the complexation of metal ions by crown ether adsorbates.
